About Us
Your trusted partner in achieving optimal health and wellness
Our Clinic
Durham Coastal Chiropractic specialises in the treatment of spinal-related back pain, joint pain, headaches, nerve irritation, work-related injuries, car accident injuries and sports injuries, to name just a few. Whatever your age, size, fitness level or condition, we tailor every treatment programme to your individual needs. We understand that patients want the highest standard of care, a clear and honest assessment and genuine concern for their long-term health.
Our aim is to help you achieve your personal health goals and enjoy an optimum quality of life through appropriate lifestyle improvements, guided treatment and education. We use the world-renowned Gonstead System, and we are one of the few chiropractic clinics in the United Kingdom trained in this highly regarded method.
Our approach follows a tradition that began in 1926 at the original Gonstead Clinic in Wisconsin, USA. Since its creation, the Gonstead method has earned global recognition for its precision and effectiveness. Gonstead clinics have continued to build their reputation through the outstanding results experienced by their patients.
This modern chiropractic technique is a natural form of healthcare that avoids the use of drugs and surgery. Instead, it focuses on spinal adjustments, exercise, rehabilitation, stress management and nutrition as a complete approach to patient care. The goal is to address the underlying causes of your condition, not just the symptoms. When your spine and nervous system function correctly and you maintain a healthy lifestyle, your body is better able to heal itself.
Where clinically indicated, our clinic uses plain film radiography, MRI scans and urine analysis. These tools allow for an accurate diagnosis, clearer insight into structural problems and appropriate referrals to specialists when required.
What to Expect
Your journey to better health starts here
Consultation and Initial Evaluation
Your visit begins with a simple questionnaire followed by a consultation with the Doctor of Chiropractic. This consultation is free and allows you to explain your concerns in detail so the doctor can determine whether chiropractic care may be appropriate for your case.
If you are accepted as a patient, a comprehensive analysis will be carried out. This includes neurological, orthopaedic and visceral assessments when necessary, instrument readings such as thermography and SEMG, and a full chiropractic spinal and extremity examination. The cost for this detailed initial evaluation is £70.
If required and clinically justified, X-ray imaging, MRI scans or laboratory tests can be arranged through referral. Prices for these services are available on request. This process provides the doctor with the information needed to make an accurate diagnosis and develop a suitable management plan.
Radiographic Imaging (When Indicated)
If further detail is needed to diagnose your complaint with accuracy, plain film radiographs (X-rays) may be recommended. These may include regional studies with 14/17 images or a full-spine weight-bearing study with 14/36 digital images.
Common reasons for taking radiographs include ruling out congenital anomalies, identifying pathology or fractures, assessing the degree of spinal degeneration and determining the exact correction vector required to realign the spine or pelvis.
We offer state-of-the-art digital X-ray facilities and follow strict protection standards, keeping patient exposure as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA). The cost for radiographs ranges from £80 to £260, depending on the type and extent of imaging required.
Report of Findings
Once all examinations and any necessary imaging are complete, you will receive a detailed explanation of your results. This includes your diagnosis, the recommended frequency and duration of care, estimated costs and the opportunity to ask any questions. This report of findings is included as part of your initial fee.
Beginning Your Chiropractic Care
If you are satisfied with the recommended plan and provide informed consent, you may begin treatment with a specific chiropractic adjustment. This may be accompanied by appropriate adjunctive procedures and tailored advice. The cost for an adjustment is £40.
In many cases, treatment can begin on the same day. In other cases, your first adjustment may take place at your next appointment, depending on your schedule, finances or the nature of your condition.
Meet Dr James Isaacson, D.C.
Dr James Isaacson's journey into chiropractic care began through personal experience. While playing professional rugby for Newcastle Falcons, he struggled with a persistent pelvic injury that threatened his career. After months of repeated setbacks, a teammate quietly recommended his chiropractor. Following his first adjustment, Dr Isaacson never experienced the issue again. This breakthrough allowed him to continue playing for another six seasons before signing with Leeds Tykes in 2006.
Inspired by the transformative impact chiropractic care had on his athletic career, Dr Isaacson pursued higher education, completing a degree in Biomedical Sciences at Northumbria University. He was then awarded a full athletic scholarship to the prestigious Life University in Marietta, Georgia, the largest chiropractic institution in the world. He graduated in 2014.
Following graduation, he remained in the United States, and accepted an associate position under Gonstead Fellow Dr Patrick Ryan in New Jersey. He continued to learn from renowned Gonstead chiropractors, including Dr Jerry Mendez of Hackensack, Dr David Rowe of Manhattan, and more recently, close friend Dr Graeme Massey in Manchester. These mentors provided authentic training in the Gonstead system, passing on the principles and precision of the technique.
After returning to the UK, Dr Isaacson held locum positions in Gateshead and Stockton before founding Durham Coastal Chiropractic in 2015. The clinic has grown significantly through patient referrals and strong testimonials.
He now balances his full-time practice with looking after his children Nicole, Lily, and Jack. Outside of the clinic he enjoys golf, mountain biking, exploring Europe with his family and staying active through gym training and yoga — a commitment he describes as essential after ten years of professional rugby.
Why Choose the Gonstead Method?
The Gonstead System is often regarded as the gold standard of chiropractic technique. It is an exceptionally precise, scientifically supported and highly effective system of adjusting the spine and extremities. Chiropractors trained in the Gonstead method undergo extensive training and years of dedicated practice to master the technique.
Dr Clarence Gonstead, the founder of the method, was famously referred to as "The Chiropractor's Chiropractor" due to the number of chiropractors who sought his expertise.

Guided by wisdom, driven by results
"Look well to the spine for the cause of the disease."
— Hippocrates, Father of Medicine (460–377 BC)
"The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease."
— Thomas Edison, US Inventor (1847–1931)
"A multitude of diseases known by other names are due to an impairment of the whole or part of the nervous system."
— Daniel David Palmer, Founder of Chiropractic (1845–1913)
Chiropractic care has remained consistent in its concepts of health and preventative care since its inception because the principles of human physiology, chemistry and biology have not changed. Chiropractic works by helping your body reconnect with its natural ability to heal itself.
Your brain controls all bodily functions, from breathing to digestion to the movement of your muscles. These signals travel through the spinal cord, which is protected by your spinal column. When the alignment or movement of spinal joints is compromised, it can disrupt this communication pathway and impact health.
Chiropractic care focuses on restoring proper function to the spine and nervous system, helping prevent degeneration, reducing nerve interference and supporting long-term wellness. Much like regular dental check-ups maintain oral health, periodic spinal assessments help prevent spinal-related issues before they develop.
Early detection is key. Many conditions treated by chiropractors could have been avoided with timely evaluation and preventative care. Having your spine assessed, and encouraging your family to do the same, is a simple and effective way to protect long-term health.
Conditions Treated
What Problems Can Be Helped?
Human function depends on a healthy, well-coordinated nervous system. Doctors of Chiropractic assess and support biomechanical and neurobiological function through conservative diagnostic procedures and specific chiropractic care. Direct access to chiropractic care is an important part of a well-rounded healthcare routine, as many health issues originate from the relationship between the spine and the nervous system.
Most new patients visit us with concerns such as low back pain, sciatica, neck pain, shoulder or arm problems and thoracic or chest discomfort. Increasing numbers of people also seek help for headaches, migraines, digestive issues, menstrual discomfort, breathing problems and allergies. Many individuals now choose preventative chiropractic care as part of their long-term health routine, often alongside exercise and nutritional changes, to keep their spine functioning optimally.
Lower Back Pain and Sciatica
Chiropractors are recognised by the government as specialists in low back pain care. Low back pain affects eight in ten people in the UK, and most have no major injury beforehand. It often develops gradually from poor posture, repetitive strain at work, incorrect lifting, limited exercise and other lifestyle factors. These stresses can create imbalances in the spine, or subluxations, which eventually cause pain.
This is why a simple movement, like bending to pick up a small object, can trigger severe pain — the spine is already compromised, and the muscles may go into protective spasm.
At Durham Coastal Chiropractic, our goal is to restore normal movement and position to affected spinal joints through specific chiropractic adjustments. This approach is supported by research, including the RAND study, and has helped many patients avoid more invasive procedures.
Your chiropractor will assess whether chiropractic care is suitable for you during your initial examination. Once problem areas are identified, a personalised treatment plan will be recommended.
Disc Problems
Spinal discs act as shock-absorbing cushions between each vertebra. They are subjected to constant pressure from gravity and everyday movement. Disc problems may be caused by genetics, age-related wear and tear or injury.
The function of a disc is directly influenced by spinal alignment. A subluxation or imbalance can cause a disc to bulge, protrude or herniate. When this occurs, the disc may irritate or compress nearby nerves, resulting in pain.
Disc-related conditions are common in chiropractic practice. The Gonstead System is particularly effective in restoring normal movement to the spine, reducing pressure on the discs and spinal joints. Alongside adjustments, we often recommend massage therapy and strengthening exercises for the abdominal and back muscles. Core stability is an essential part of preventing recurring disc problems.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the degeneration of joint cartilage and bone resulting from natural "wear and tear." In the spine, it is often accompanied by disc degeneration and increased friction between adjacent vertebrae. This friction leads to strain, loss of motion and irritation of the facet joints. When combined with repetitive stress, weakened muscles, ageing and hereditary factors, osteoarthritis can cause significant low back and leg pain.
Chiropractic care may help slow the progression of osteoarthritis and improve daily comfort. Ongoing chiropractic correction can also support better long-term spinal function. Because osteoarthritis often reduces spinal flexibility, the spine becomes more prone to injury.
Treatment may include chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, stretching and strengthening exercises. We can also recommend natural, drug-free approaches to managing pain and inflammation.
Whiplash
Whiplash is the common term for an injury caused by forceful forward and backward movement of the head, known as hyperflexion and hyperextension of the cervical spine. Car accidents, falls and sudden impacts often cause whiplash.
Symptoms may include headaches, visual disturbances, neck stiffness, reduced range of motion and pain in the neck, shoulders or arms. These symptoms may appear immediately, but it is common for them to develop hours, days or even months after the injury.
Even if you feel little or no pain after an incident, it is important to have your spine assessed. Proper structural alignment is essential for long-term health and recovery.
Chiropractic care can help restore correct alignment and function to the cervical spine, giving it the opportunity to heal properly. Additional recommendations may include massage therapy, stretching and strengthening exercises and nutritional guidance to support your recovery and overall wellbeing.
Chiropractic Care Can Help With Many Conditions
Do you experience any of these conditions?
Allergies
Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to substances like pollen, dust or foods, leading to symptoms such as sneezing, congestion and irritation. Chiropractic care may help support overall nervous system function, which plays a role in immune response.
Asthma
Asthma causes inflammation and tightening of the airways, making breathing difficult. Some patients find symptom relief when spinal function affecting respiratory pathways is improved.
Bedwetting
Bedwetting in children is often linked to delayed nerve development or bladder control issues. Chiropractic care may support nervous system function involved in bladder regulation.
Degenerative Arthritis
Degenerative arthritis is the gradual breakdown of joint cartilage, causing stiffness, swelling and pain. Improving joint motion and reducing stress on the spine may help slow progression and ease discomfort.
Elbow Pain
Elbow pain is commonly caused by overuse, inflammation or nerve irritation. Restoring proper joint and nerve function can help reduce pain and improve mobility.
Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia causes widespread pain, fatigue and sensitivity due to changes in how the nervous system processes pain. Chiropractic care may help reduce musculoskeletal tension and improve overall wellbeing.
Headaches
Headaches often result from tension, poor posture or nerve irritation in the neck. Correcting spinal imbalances can help reduce frequency and intensity.
Heartburn
Heartburn occurs when stomach acid moves upward into the oesophagus, causing burning discomfort. Improving spinal and nerve function may support digestive processes.
Herniated Disc
A herniated disc occurs when the soft centre of a spinal disc pushes outward and irritates nearby nerves. Chiropractic techniques may help reduce pressure and improve spinal movement.
Hip Pain
Hip pain can arise from joint wear, muscle imbalance or misalignment of the pelvis. Restoring proper mechanics can help reduce discomfort and improve mobility.
Infertility
Some fertility challenges may be linked to stress or nervous system imbalance. Chiropractic care can help optimise nerve function, which plays a role in reproductive health.
Knee Pain
Knee pain often develops from joint strain, injury or poor alignment in the legs or hips. Improving structural balance can help reduce pressure and enhance movement.
Mid Back Pain
Mid back pain is commonly caused by poor posture, muscle tension or restricted spinal joints. Improving spinal mobility can help ease discomfort.
Migraines
Migraines are severe headaches often triggered by nerve irritation, stress or environmental factors. Chiropractic care may reduce nerve pressure and improve overall function.
Neck Pain
Neck pain frequently results from poor posture, injuries or spinal misalignment. Gentle adjustments can help restore motion and reduce tension.
Numbness / Tingling
Numbness and tingling occur when nerves become irritated or compressed. Addressing spinal or joint-related causes can help restore normal sensation.
Scoliosis
Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curve of the spine that can cause uneven posture and discomfort. Chiropractic management may help improve mobility and slow progression.
Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain often stems from joint irritation, muscle strain or nerve involvement. Improving alignment and mobility can help ease symptoms.
Sinus Problems
Sinus problems occur when sinus passages become inflamed or blocked, causing pressure and congestion. Some patients report relief when nerve function affecting sinus drainage is improved.
Sleeping Problems
Sleep issues are often linked to pain, stress or poor nervous system regulation. Chiropractic care may relax the body and improve sleep quality by reducing tension.
Spinal Fracture
A spinal fracture is a break in one of the vertebrae and requires medical diagnosis and care. Chiropractors can help provide supportive care only after medical clearance.
Spinal Surgery
Patients who have had spinal surgery may still experience stiffness or nerve-related symptoms. Chiropractic adjustments tailored for post-surgical patients may help restore mobility and comfort.
Sports Injury
Sports injuries often involve strained muscles, joint irritation or misalignment. Chiropractic care helps restore proper movement to support healing and performance.
Subluxation
A subluxation refers to reduced movement or misalignment of a spinal joint that may affect nerve function. Correcting subluxations can help improve overall health and relieve symptoms.
Vertigo & Dizziness
Vertigo and dizziness often result from imbalances in the inner ear or cervical spine. Chiropractic adjustments may help restore proper nerve and joint function in the neck.
